WoodTECH Issue 12 – Latest news, research and resources

Welcome to this latest issue of www.woodtech.news. We brought forward the second issue for the year as we’ve been inundated with wood processing and manufacturing stories. Thanks to all of you who have contributed over the last few weeks.

In this issue we cover a number of recent equipment upgrades within local mills including; an in-depth story on the installation of a new edger line to provide visual grading capability for Tenon’s (New Zealand’s largest single-site producer of defect-free, appearance grade radiata pine products) high-value shop and moulding products, the recent opening of the biggest single capacity continuous timber kiln at Wespine’s operation in Australia and we cover the development of a fully automated wood treatment operation that’s now capable of producing 200,000m3 of treated product per year on an eight hour shift.

We’ve also built in a story – along with a number of eye-catching images – that appeared in a Sunday paper and across social media in New Zealand recently. It looks inside the operation of a New Zealand sawmill. Many of you will recognise the mill. Ideally targeted the releases were aimed at the wider community. They were successful in dispelling the myths of the mill being a dirty, dark and a dangerous place to work, through the mill workers they’ve been able to highlight the new technology being employed in a modern mill and it also puts a much-needed plug-in for the industry’s need for future workers. Great coverage.

Finally, thanks to all of you who have put up your hand to be involved as presenters at this year’s two-yearly sawmilling event, WoodTECH 2019 being planned for New Zealand and Australia in September. We’re in contact with a large number of local and international tech providers in designing the programme right now. For those looking to exhibit, details will be sent out shortly. If keen on being sent the information electronically to look over the options that are open to you, please get in touch with us (brent.apthorp@fiea.org.nz) and we’ll get the information out to you as soon as we can.

That’s it for this month. Enjoy this latest issue.
